This year’s event, which focused on the theme ‘The Jesuits and their ministry to young people’ included students from countries as diverse as Hungary, Lithuania, Spain, Albania, Kosovo, Italy, Poland and Ireland. Each delegation shared presentations about the rich history of accompaniment and formation offered by their Jesuit Colleges through innovative and diverse projects and programmes for young people. Through these programmes students are given the opportunity to discover more about themselves in a dynamic context of voluntary service, spiritual retreats and social activities.

‘Our aim,’ said one Jesuit who serves in a depressed area in Spain, ‘is to offer love and positive opportunities and experiences to young people who come from difficult backgrounds. Young people thrive with art, sports and dreams!’ As for those who come from more comfortable environments, they are invited to participate in formative voluntary programmes offered by Jesuits: “I learnt how to understand differences without judgement, embracing the world that is around me, and making me into the person I am now,” one student said, a sentiment shared by all.

The Convegno was a study, sharing and celebration of how, through their college activities,, students have found a place of welcome, belonging and encouragement, spurring them on to become contemplatives in action in in schools, universities, parishes, spiritual centres and voluntary organizations, working collaboratively with others to effect change for the poor and marginalized.

Besides learning about the experiences of young people from other countries, the Convegno also offered workshops on the four areas of service to which Jesuits worldwide will give preference: Journeying with youth; Working with the excluded; Caring for our common home; and Promoting discernment and the spiritual exercises.

The students were hosted by families of St Aloysius College sixth formers, which enhanced the exchange of cultures, and the event’s programme also included a visits to Mdina and Valletta and an evening of international performances.
